Why Women Love Paranormal Romance

As writers of paranormal romance, we’ve always loved reading J.R. Ward, Nalini Singh, and Christine Feehan. Being females, lovers of the paranormal, and authors of such books, we looked at each other yesterday and simultaneously said, “Why?”

To analyze it further, we started to research and realized that all paranormal romance has some, if not most, of the following characteristics:

Why Do We Want to Read and Why?​

• We like stories that take twists and turns and take us on a roller coaster ride.

• Dark, even scary stories appeal to us. We want excitement and danger.

• If our hero is supernatural, we know the female character will be protected. It’s even better if she can match him with her own “gifts”.

• We adore the bad boys, always. If they have a sense of humor, even better.

• We’re in love with love, and we want it in our stories. We especially like burning, all-consuming love. Forbidden love is good. Love triangles are good – especially two supernatural beings and a female. (Shades of Brogio, Kane, and Selene in the Snow Blood Series by Carol McKibben, of course.) 

• appreciate when love happens and isn’t a choice.

• You know we like it when it takes the entire book for lovers to get together. They can be thrown together in a violent world, have an immediate and powerful connection, but something keeps them apart, whether it’s the action in the story or some secret that will tear them apart. Past mystery is paramount.

• Feuding factions are important. The stories are impossible of course… they involve everlasting life, supernatural power, the creepiest of villains… but isn’t that the point? The impossible carries us away from everyday life. We want to be swept up in an emotional storm or vicariously live an interesting, exciting life.
